On a beautiful November afternoon, with a cloudless sky and sunshine, we met Catarina for the first time in the gardens of Sintra’s municipal library and were immediately captivated by her friendly and strong presence. Unfortunately we could not visit her on one of her ongoing building sites, due to our very spontaneous schedule and were lucky she could meet us at all. We already thought we wouldn’t make it to our appointment, as our car got blocked for not paying a ticket over (delicious) lunch in Lisbon.
Catarina impressed us with her detailed knowledge about construction with rammed earth, her conviction of propagating environmentally friendly and local building materials and her strong motivation to pass on her specific knowledge about green design that she gained from years of experience throughout Europe.

Catarina Pinto founded Terrapalha studio in Sintra, Portugal. She explores green design, natural building materials and ecological solutions in architecture with the aim to improve life quality while meeting environmental guidelines. She passes on her knowledge in workshops and festival constructions, such as Boom festival in Portugal.
