Baumeister Magazine, among the classics of German architecture press, published an article on PIONIRA in 2020. Catherina Wagenstaller interviewed us and wrote the article, focussing on our core philosophy and ambitions. Read the full article here.
The portrait series on young architects by Nxt A features PIONIRA in the series "community check". Nxt A is a network and medium for young architects. The portrait series asks young architects about their practice and ideas behind their work – what drives them? What are they reading? Read the full article here.
Initial ideas for PIONIRA were developed during our Master studies at Universität der Künste (UdK) Berlin. The university's network shared upcoming projects and ideas during quarantine, to foster cultural exchange and promotion in difficult times. See the video and excerpt here.
our future is full of possibilities
People and projects who already explore these possibilities, often act in a humble and small-scale nature. We believe these require a platform: PIONIRA.
PIONIRA is a platform that looks for pioni(ee)rs.
Pioneers that answer the pressing question: But how?
A platform that inspires a new way of thinking and acting.
By portraying projects, authentic places and the people behind them, PIONIRA searches for the definition of a future, holistic architecture on a European scale, beginning with Portugal. Through collecting and publishing, we aim to inspire and encourage people to actively shape our world, preserving its beauty. We strongly believe this can only be brought about by fostering diversity in every sense.
As architects we believe that there is not only a technical, measurable aspect, but also an immeasurable and perhaps larger component to the projects we curate. The examples we collect are neither finite, nor dogmatic. They serve as a subjective, curated beginning on a path towards a hopeful future.

LENA
After growing up in Germany and Switzerland, Lena became accustomed to travel and adapting to new situations. Her interest for photography and film has grown in the past years, together with her interest in architecture. She spent a year working in Porto during her studies at UdK in Berlin. A fundamental belief in a holistic approach to life not only motivates her daily routine, but also determined the initial direction PIONIRA would take.
CHARLOTTE
After studying international relations in France and Italy, Charlotte came to study Architecture in Berlin from 2014 onwards. Interested in the confluence of the two, roadtrips through Europe have filled her summers, constantly exploring new places and looking for characters that spark her curiosity. Living and working in Lisbon for a year inspired PIONIRA's beginnings.
